"Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained." ~Marie Curie
Self Confidence... The Key!
- Nursing students have reported that the most influential source of self-confidence is clinical skill performance.
- Clinical nursing education demands that students move quickly from theoretical learning to real-life situations dealing with illness and patients. For some students, this transition can be both frightening and filled with self-doubt. Lack of self-confidence in student nurses can interfere with their ability to acquire new knowledge and hinder their ability to tackle difficult situations (Sharif & Masoumi, 2005).
- Confidence enables students to approach difficult skills with lower anxiety.
- According to Bandura's theory, individuals' motivations and actions are guided more by their belief in their capabilities than what is objectively true.
-Evidence of the literature shows two themes are associated with higher levels of anxiety in practicum experiences of nursing students:
- Lack of confidence in nursing skills, knowledge and judgment
- Interpersonal relationships with patients and their families, healthcare team members and the preceptors (Wang, Lee, & Espin, 2019).
